A Bluebox was a hacker/phreaker tool of the 60's-70's that used a set of tones to simulate Bell's internal control tones and seize control of the telephone network. These tones were similar to touch-tone tones, but different frequencies. The box can be used to control a simulation of the old network running on an Asterisk PBX system under Linux.
